87 brave kids swam the widest stretch of Periyar which is 600 meters wide from Ashramam Kadavu to Manappuram Kadavu. The stretch of Periyar is 30 feet deep and full of massive currents and kids took 27 minutes to swim. 32 swimmers were below 10 years, 6-year-old Abhirami was the youngest among all.
The event was inaugurated by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath from Ashramam Kadavu. All the swimmers are training with Saji Valassery, the veteran training people in river swimming for the past eight years. 1200 children and 105 adults are trained by him so far. The event was cheered by legislators and well-wishers.
All participated swimmers were honoured with certificates presented by Aluva Municipality and the memento by Valasseril River Swimming Club. Municipality Chairperson Lissy Abraham was the chief speaker at the function. Councilors P M Moosakutty, Lolita Sivadasan, A C Santhosh Kumar and Shyji teacher along with political veterans P M Saheer, K J Dominic, Madhavankutty Nair, Convenor Sabu Pariyarath, Secretary Suresh Muppathadam, Treasurer Nisar Kadungallur, Yunuz, Santhosh, and Nadirshah were also present.
Life jackets, mechanised boats, rescue boats, scuba divers and ambulance services were also arranged for emergency. Swimming instructors P M Saheer, M I Hamsa, Abdul Azeez, Abdul Rasheed and Rajesh were also present in the event.
