The Sports Minister of India Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announces the revamped Khelo India scheme under which 1,000 selected athletes will receive an annual scholarship of Rs. 5 lakh each for eight years.
The main approach of the programme is to identify and groom young sporting talent to enable a pathway from schools to Olympics.
The government has sanctioned Rs. 1,756 crore between 2017-18 and 2019-20 and will promote 20 universities across India as hubs of sporting excellence to help talented sportspersons pursue the dual pathway of education and competitive sports
The sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said, “The new scheme will focus on encouraging talent and connecting rural India to global games and he added that Companies can also fund the Khelo India scheme under corporate social responsibility.”
The entire sports ecosystem, including infrastructure, community sports, talent identification, coaching for excellence, competition structure and sports economy would be revamped under Khelo India programme
The ministry also said, “Health and education will be mapped in the age group of 10 to 18 years and schools will be graded where Sports facilities will also be mapped with geographical location. Sports and education will be mixed.”
