With still 3 more years to go for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the full and final event list will not be announced until later this year. However, IPC has announced the medal programmes for all the sports taking place at the games.
According to the sources, 4400 athletes will compete across 22 sports for 537 medals in Tokyo. Viewing the breakdown of the game, many sports have additional medal events and only two sports have reduced them.
Swimming is one of the sports that has a reduction in the medal events. Compared to the Rio 2016 Paralympics, swimming will have 6 less medal events in Tokyo Olympics 2020 making it 146 medal events of swimming to contest.
“I feel great empathy for those athletes whose events are not on the programme, however, I know there are valid reasons behind the IPC’s decisions which I know they will feedback to International Federations,” says Chelsey Gotell, Chair of the IPC Athletes’ Council.
Good news to the women athletes is that the games will feature at least a 17% increase in women’s participation, as 1,756 slots are available for women excluding the gender-free spots.
